Ramanujan a self taught genius

India had been a country who has given birth to great souls from ancient times .Be it aryabhatta Brahma Gupta and many more.

In 19 century there born a child in small village kumba konam in erode madras who later beacame one of the greatest mathematician of his time and one of the brightest minds india has ever produced . He was born to very poor family and so could not afford higher studies ..he also gain a scholarship but it lasted for few months as he couldn’t do good in other subjects but continued his exceptional performance in maths..

Few years later he got married and then had to earn a living and fortunately got a job of clerk and from there on his originality started exposing . He started working on proofs of advanced mathematics but needed some guidance .so he wrote a letter to professor to have a look in his theorems and publish them..but two of them neglected it thinking him a fake person.

Then he wrote to one of the most prolific and famous mathematician of his time G.H. Hardy. Hardy got struck by his letter and made arrangements so that he could come to Cambridge and get some education before he would start working on his own.

On 1912 he arrived at Cambridge, and first met john little wood one of the other famous mathematician of that time, he took him to G.H. Hardy ..Hardy when asked him to get some education ,he replied by saying i am here to publish my work and showed him his other two notebooks full of proofs and theorems and also his works on prime .This amazed Hardy and soon they started working together and was soon able to crack partitions , one of the most important mysteries of maths in 19th century and 20th century . He was later given a fellowship in Cambridge university which was a great achievement for him as India was still under British rule. But there he got diagnosed with tuberculosis due to deficiency of food . But he soon got rid of it due to good medical facilities..

Then he returned to India but soon died after one year as he again suffered from tuberculosis and died in year 1920. G.H. Hardy regarded Ramanujan’s death as one of the greatest blows to him. John little wood once said ” that every positive integer is his personal friend “. To Hardy’s question on how he comes to these theorems ramanujan replied, ” goddess comes to me and told these equations in my ears. He further added that “an equation has no meaning to me unless it expresses the thought of God”.

Later in 1986 a lost notebook of Ramanujan was found containing some groundbreaking formulas and are now being used to understand the behaviour of Black holes.
