Manjul bhargava : a math prodigy great with numbers

So , here I am again with my refreshing new post on an astounding mathematician and a living legend Manjul bhargava well known for his work on number theory.

He was an american -Canadian born mathematician who in his early age showed some extraordinary skills in solving puzzles and interest towards mathematics. A very interesting fact about him was that he didn’t follow the methods taught in class rather find his own methods to solve problems.

His mother was herself a maths professor at Hofrsta university and obviously his first math teacher. He did his schooling in plainedge high school and later got his B.A. degree from Harvard university and was awarded with morgaan prize the same year in 1996.

He then started his thesis on gauss’s classical law for composition of binary quadratic and quintic forms eventually discovered some important formulas which are useful in number field ,elliptical curves and parameterization of quartic and quintic orders . His mentor and professor while he was going on with his thesis was Andrew wiles who himself is one of the very great mathematician of 21st century well known for his proof of Fermat’s last theorem.

He was awarded with fields medal in 2014 for his discovery of powerful new methods in dealing with geometry of numbers . The award is a very prestigious one as it is the highest award given in fields of mathematics and is given every four years.

His noted works include :

  1. Fourteen new style gauss

    composition.

2. Proof of 15 theorems, including an extension to study of odd prime no.

3. Proof that average rank of all elliptical curves over Q is bounded along with arul shankar etc.

Many of his published notebooks are: on higher composition laws 3 and laws 4, the factorial function and generalization . He also studied Sanskrit from his grandfather and learnt tabla from his guru Zakir Hussain . ” His works shows him as a man of great intellectual mind and of course a true and gifted mathematician of his age because otherwise he wouldn’t have discovered such mind boggling proofs and theorems”.

“Mathematicians are not made they are born”.

In a recent interview given to Dr. Prannoy he told that when he was in his school he also used to bunk maths classes as he find the maths class very boring. On asking about how the maths is being taught in schools he answered that maths is a very amusing and interesting subject but what makes it boring is the way it is being taught in schools ,especially in India . He himself had been appointed as a professor in Princeton university and has found out unique methods using daisies ,poetries and music to teach mathematics. Peter sarnak of Princeton university has said of bhargava

At mathematics he’s at the very top end. For a guy so young I don’t remember anyone so decorated at his age. He has certainly started with a bang and has not lead it get to his head ,which is unusual. Of course he couldn’t do what he does if he wasn’t brilliant. It’s his exceptional talent so striking.
